The Backstory:
The iSchool Inclusion Institute is an initiative designed to foster diversity in the Information Sciences. As a member of the 2014 cohort, I spent two months of my summer at the University of Pittsburgh in order to learn more about the various avenues within the field of Information Science. At the core of the program was a year-long research project that would require the members of the cohort to group themselves based on their interests and work together under the guidance of a PhD fellow with a matching expertise. The groups would determine their research topic during the opening session of the program and work together to see the project through to the end. Under the guidance of Oliver Haimson of the University of California Irvine, my group chose to explore the relationship between government action and popular opinion as it related to reproductive health rights in America. Our research explored the nature of social media as a democratizing platform. Much of our collaborative elements were completed remotely with group members residing in different states from coast to coast. Monthly Skype meetings (and lots of coffee) led us to the completion of this project. I spearheaded the poster and presentation design.
